How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on SmokehouseGuide starts with one question: will this machine dry what you want to make, in the amounts you make it?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with what you dry

Jerky, venison, herbs and fruit ask different things of a dehydrator. We sort machines by tray count, drying area and heat range first.

We check the temperature range each maker lists, because meat needs more heat than herbs. When a detail matters for jerky, we say so.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at trays, drying area, watts, the heat range, timers, fan position and tray material. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like uneven drying, trays that crack or a loud fan.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A machine that's great for big batches of venison may score lower in a guide for a small kitchen.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every dehydrator we cover.

Our guides are not food safety advice. For jerky, follow the USDA's jerky food safety guidance and your dehydrator's manual for heat and handling.
